Death Note デスノート, Desu Nōto is a series of live-action Japanese films, including a short film and a miniseries. It is based on the Death Note manga series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The first two films adapt the manga series with some notable changes, and after that the series continues with original story lines. Overview[] The first and second films, titled Death Note and Death Note The Last Name, were both released in 2006. The two films adapt the main manga storyline but keep the battle between Light Yagami and L. As with the manga, the story centers around university student Light who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook, called a Death Note, that kills anyone whose name is written in it. The two films were directed by Shūsuke Kaneko, produced by Nippon Television, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures Japan. A spin-off film directed by Hideo Nakata by the name of L Change the WorLd was released on February 9, 2008. A short film focusing on Matsuda, titled Matsuda Spinoff, was aired on television prior to the film's release and was later released as a DVD extra. A fourth film, titled Death Note Light Up the NEW World, was release on October 29, 2016. A three-episode prequel miniseries bridging the 10-year gap, titled Death Note New Generation, premiered September 16, 2016 on Hulu Japan. The day before the film released, the re-edited version of the first two films with newly shot footage was aired on Nihon TV under the title Death Note Genius of the Counterattack デスノート 逆襲の天才, Death Note Gyakushu no Tensai.[1][2][3] Plot[] Death Note and Death Note The Last Name[] Death Note The Last Name, the second film in the series. L Change the WorLd, the spin-off third film in the series. Main articles Death Note 2006 film and Death Note The Last Name Light Yagami is a To-Oh University student who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note," lying on the ground. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it, that person will be killed. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a Shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the New World" by passing his judgment on criminals. The number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L." L deduces that the murderer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "Killer", is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a race to prove mental superiority between the two begins. L Change the WorLd[] With only a few days left before he dies, L continues solving cases. When a small village in Thailand experiences a deadly virus outbreak, F sends Watari a message along with a boy who is immune to the virus. L must figure out who's behind the creation of the virus and stop them before it's released globally. North American remake[] Netflix's Death Note film poster of Light Main article Death Note 2017 film Netflix developed a separate Death Note film which was released streaming on August 25, 2017.[4] The film was directed by Adam Wingard and stars Nat Wolff as Light Turner based on Light Yagami, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton Misa Amane, and Keith Stanfield as L. The film location is set in Seattle instead of Tokyo, and many changes were made to the storyline and the characters. Talk about an American remake began in 2007,[5] the year after the release of the first two Japanese films. Until its release in 2017, the production shifted multiple directors, screenwriters, and distributors. Wingard was announced as the director in 2015,[6] casting began in late 2015, and principal photography took place in 2016. Warner Brothers was on board to distribute the film when they dropped the production just before it was ready to go into principal photography, but it was picked up by Netflix who gave it a budget of $40-$50 million. I'm often on the defending party for films. I notice that many reviewers seem to complain much about any movie is released. That was the case with Alien covenant, for example. That movie was far superior to this one. Prior to the film, I watched in about three days the entire Death Note series. Because I really just got into it and don't plan on watching the anime again soon, I don't consider myself a fan never watched animes before, by the way, but I reckon it was a very clever series. At times it had its cheesiness, but still worked pretty well. When the source material is well written, I don't think that departing from it is the right choice. The Martian proved that, for instance. Changching the plot should be always for the benefit of it, and not to overly simplify the story and to take out some of it core Note's film adaptation chose this second route. I have the feeling that they didn't understand at all what was the series about. The anime mostly focused on L and Light's intellectual fight, battles of tricks and making one and another be unsure about what his intentions are. Ryuk who I thought would be a practical effect and not CGI, as instead it sadly proved to be had more importance. Truth is, this movie had also a very low runtime in order to cover up the plot well, it might have needed an extra 40 minutes so a 2h 30m film, but it would have needed an entirely different when the movie finished, it turned out to be just a rushed sequence of events, most of which seemed incoherent if seen next to the anime, which was a very clever story. Ultimately, the film settles for a needless and overly bloody gore feast. The speed of this film is so fast paced that, by when I arrived to the 1 hour mark, I could not believe that we had forty minutes left. And I came to realise that nothing that happened felt relevant to the whole storyline. Death note should have been adapted in a slightly slower paced film, and had minimal gore most of people died by heart attack. That wouldn't mean that it had to be necessarily a boring film, or a non-R rated one. The themes of moral ambiguity and killing powers make it anyways a very dark story to only positive note I could find in all of this is that sometimes both L and Light's actor delivered scenes which made me suggest that they where up to the roles, if the original anime was to be followed. L sometimes used the anime character's same line delivery, Light seemed capable of behaving as a bloodthirsty, dark and evil character. Sadly, the movie didn't allow the actors to perform their characters rightfully. Williem Dafoe's voice sounded exactly like the original Ryuk's. That said, Ryuk appeared for about 4 minutes, so there wasn't much this is the perfect example on how an adaptation of a good source material can simply suck. I recall only Eragon being such an unfaithful, unrightful and almost offensive adaptation to a very clever and deep story.

Light is an average college student with a close group of friends and little ambition, working a part-time job at a pub. He also genuinely likes Misa Amane, regularly attends her concerts, and intentionally looks up the name of her parents' murderer to kill him. Light wanted to be a police officer when he was younger but his father's absence after his mother's death caused him to drop this ambition in the show's present day. Misa Amane sings in the popular girl group Ichigo Berry. She realizes Light is Kira when she spots him at one of her concerts and cannot see his lifespan after she obtains the Shinigami Eyes. Misa's Death Note is red instead of black. She does not obtain the Shinigami Eyes a second time, and survives albeit with erased memories. Unlike in the manga, where the lifespan isn't understood by humans, Misa can decipher the numbers floating above a person's head and thus knows when they will die. Ryuk gives the Death Note directly to Light, rather than just dropping it for anyone to find. He actively encourages Light to use the notebook, even bringing it back when discarded by the latter. Near is introduced early and is in regular contact with L. Near therefore has a stronger presence throughout the events of the series. Mello is depicted as a puppet to which Near gives a personality and a voice. L and Watari treat Mello as a separate person, although they and Near are all aware that he is a puppet. Teru Mikami is introduced early as the prosecutor handling Misa's case, meaning that the two are in regular contact. He writes L's name in Misa's stolen Death Note after seeing it with his Shinigami Eyes, and survives albeit with erased memories. Raye Penber's fiance is Cathy Cambell, but she doesn't take the role of Naomi Misora, who isn't in the series. L wears shoes, sprawls in his chairs and consumes energy drinks instead of confectionary. He changes his shirt when it gets stained, and crosses his legs instead of propping them in front of his torso. Rem survives, and returns to the Shinigami Realm with Ryuk. Release[] The series aired on NTV from July 5, 2015 to September 13, 2015. The series was simultaneously released streaming online with English subtitles by Crunchyroll in multiple territories. The first episode was available on July 8th at 730 pm Pacific Time.[1] It was available within a few days of the Japanese airing for Crunchyroll subscribers, and a week later for free for all viewers. The series was released in Japan on DVD and Blu-ray as a box set on January 27th, 2016. Music[] The drama was scored by Takayuki Hattori and released on the Death Note Original Soundtrack. The song Aryarya, performed by Misa's group Ichigo Berry, prominently features in the series. Trivia[] Cathy Cambell's name is clearly written as "Cambell" onscreen in episode 2, but the official subtitles misspell it as "Campbell." Belle's name is written as "Belle" onscreen in episode 3, but the official subtitles misspell it as "Bell." At the end of the series finale, the teaser trailer for Death Note Light Up the NEW World aired for the first time under the initial title Death Note 2016.
